An Alternative Method

The Charter’s Home Study Program is an alternative method of providing instruction to students. Students receive instruction and complete assignments supervised by a parent or designated home educator. While home study students are provided the district-adopted curriculum and meet the district’s requirements, home study offers flexibility to meet individual student needs, interests, and styles of learning.

The Mark West Charter Home School Program is an active partnership between the school district and parents who choose to instruct their children at home. The responsibility for delivering daily instruction belongs to the parents; the school district provides direction, guidance, and materials with a credentialed teacher developing assignment sheets and monitoring progress. Teacher, parent, and child meet regularly to review student work, preview new assignments and exchange textbooks/resources as needed.

Tailored Skills and Standards

In Mark West's Charter Home Study Program, skills and standards can be tailored to address a student’s special interests. Thus, home school students have the opportunity to engage in independent study projects that extend their knowledge and enhance learning in an individual way. This individualized instruction provided for students through home school follows guidelines established by the district to ensure grade level skills and standards are met.

Home school students take part in all district and state testing to assist parents with information on how his/her child is achieving in reading, writing and mathematics compared to other children at each grade level in our district and statewide.Programs offered at school sites, such as music, instrumental music, and art are made available to home school students. Attendance at assemblies and special school events can also be arranged.

Day on Campus

In addition Mark West Charter Home Study Programs offers an optional “day on campus” each Tuesday from 9-3:00PM on the San Miguel Elementary School campus where all home study students come to our classroom for a day of school. This special day is filled with fun activities the multi-age class enjoys including library time, arts and crafts, gardening, jazzercise, writing and hands-on science and social studies.

Day on Campus provides this one day a week for students to practice social skills and receive enrichment. This is also a free day for the parent/home educator. The Home Study class attends several field trips throughout the year including: performances at the Wells Fargo Performing Arts Center, Environmental Center at Spring Lake, and the Sonoma County Harvest Festival.

A Strong Academic Foundation

All Mark West students receive a quality education with a strong academic foundation through challenging curriculum. Home schooling provides yet another opportunity for meeting these goals as well as the needs of students and their families.
